After Cochlear Implant Surgery – What Comes Next? This cochlear implant was successfully performed by Dr. Akbar Abbas on a young girl, marking the beginning of her journey to better hearing.

Here’s what happens in the weeks that follow surgery:

Activation Timeline: The cochlear implant is typically switched on about 1 to 4 weeks after surgery, allowing time for healing and for any swelling to subside. In some cases, early activation may take place within 24 to 48 hours, depending on the patient’s condition.

The Activation Appointment: At the activation session: An audiologist fits the external sound processor The implant is activated for the first time Initial settings are kept low to help the brain gradually adapt Parents are guided on how to use and care for the device.

What the Child Experiences: At first, the sounds might seem unusual—sometimes robotic or metallic. This is completely normal. Over time, with support and practice, the sounds will start to feel more natural as the brain adapts.

Rehabilitation & Follow-Up: Following activation, the child will attend a series of rehabilitation sessions with an audiologist and speech therapist. These sessions are crucial to:

Fine-tune the sound processor

Help the child interpret new sounds

Improve listening and speech skills through guided exercises and interactive apps

A Message from Dr. Akbar Abbas: “As a surgeon, it’s always rewarding to see young children begin their journey into the world of sound. With patience, family support, and consistent rehabilitation, cochlear implants can transform lives.”
