Discover more about otosclerosis and hearing loss in Dr. Akbar Abbas’s media appearance, aimed at raising public awareness about this common ear condition leading to treatable hearing loss.

Otosclerosis and Hearing Loss

Otosclerosis is a condition characterized by abnormal bone growth in the middle ear, specifically affecting the stapes bone. This abnormal growth interferes with the transmission of sound vibrations to the inner ear, resulting in hearing loss. While the exact cause of otosclerosis remains unclear, genetic factors seem to play a significant role, with a family history of the condition increasing the risk of developing it. Additionally, hormonal factors, such as pregnancy or the use of oral contraceptives, may exacerbate the condition.

Primarily affecting young adults, otosclerosis often manifests between the ages of 15 and 45, with women being more susceptible than men. This gender disparity is thought to be related to hormonal influences, although further research is needed to fully understand this relationship. Moreover, individuals of Caucasian descent are at a higher risk of developing otosclerosis compared to other ethnicities.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of otosclerosis and hearing loss typically involves a thorough clinical examination by an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist, accompanied by audiometric testing to assess hearing loss severity. Symptoms may include gradually worsening hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and dizziness or balance problems.

Treatment Options

Fortunately, several treatment options are available for managing otosclerosis and restoring hearing function. For individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss, hearing aids can effectively amplify sound and improve communication. Surgical interventions, such as stapedotomy or stapedectomy, may be recommended for more severe cases or when hearing aids provide insufficient benefit.

Stapedotomy involves creating a small hole in the footplate of the stapes bone to bypass the abnormal bone growth, allowing sound vibrations to reach the inner ear more effectively. Alternatively, a stapedectomy involves removing a portion of the stapes bone and replacing it with a prosthesis to restore hearing function.

At AKUH, we offer comprehensive diagnosis and management options for otosclerosis across all age groups. Our services include hearing aid provision tailored to individual needs, as well as state-of-the-art endoscopic stapedotomy procedures performed by experienced ENT surgeons.

This valuable information was discussed between Dr. Akbar Abbas and Ms. Shirmeen Azam on the occasion of World Hearing Day 2024, underscoring the importance of understanding and addressing otosclerosis for improved hearing health.
