For children born with severe to profound hearing loss, early diagnosis and timely treatment can make the difference between lifelong communication challenges and the opportunity to develop normal speech, attend mainstream school, and thrive alongside their peers.

Why Early Cochlear Implantation Matters

The first 1,000 days of life—approximately the first three years—are critical for speech and language development.

Children diagnosed with severe to profound hearing loss should be assessed as early as possible. When a cochlear implant is recommended, timely intervention offers the best opportunity for normal listening, speech, and language development.

Cochlear Implantation is More Than Surgery

A successful cochlear implant programme consists of two equally important components:

• Cochlear implant surgery
• Speech and language rehabilitation

The surgery is usually completed in 1½ to 2 hours as a day-care procedure, allowing most children to return home the same day.

Approximately one month later, the speech processor is activated, followed by regular speech therapy sessions. Consistent rehabilitation is essential to help children develop listening and spoken language skills.

Funding Support at AKUH

The cost of the implant itself is often the biggest barrier for families.

To help eligible children receive timely treatment, AKUH has made donor-supported funding available for cochlear implantation. Through this initiative, many children have already benefited from life-changing treatment that may otherwise have been financially out of reach.

Parents who are worried about treatment costs are encouraged to seek an assessment and discuss eligibility for available funding.

Early Assessment Saves Valuable Time

Some families are advised to wait and see if a child starts speaking naturally. However, delaying assessment can reduce the opportunity for the best possible speech and language outcomes.

If your child does not respond to sounds or has been diagnosed with severe hearing loss, early evaluation by an experienced cochlear implant team is strongly recommended.
